Lab Section | "We work behind the scenes at the Berkeley Free Clinic running the tests necessary for client services."
Applications for the 2019 Lab Section cohort are now closed.
Applications for the next lab training will be available in December 2019.
The Lab Section supports the direct services provided by members of the Berkeley Free Clinic through careful examination and testing of client samples.
The Lab Section, formally a subsection of the Medical Section, offers clients basic clinical laboratory tests to deliver expedient results the same night of their appointment. We are not a research or academic lab and have no client interaction, but we do provide a variety of services including:
Urinanalysis (dipstick and sediment)
Saline wet mount analysis
Rapid Strep A testing
Rapid pregnancy testing
Rapid HIV testing
We operate on the same nights as the General Medical clinic (Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday evenings) and Saturdays with the Saturday Services Section.
Prospective Lab Volunteers Looking to Apply
No prior experience with performing laboratory tests is required. However, volunteers are expected to have a willingness to learn and genuine interest in the clinic’s philosophy towards client-centered care. New volunteers will be trained on basic microscopy, biosafety protocols, and fundamentals in conducting clinical laboratory tests. Our volunteers come from diverse backgrounds, so anyone is encouraged to apply!
If you are interested in getting more info about volunteering, please attend an All-Clinic Orientation (ACO)! that takes place the third Monday of every month at 7:30PM. We will be there to answer any questions you have about the funding section and talk about your interests. Please note, it is requirement for all prospective volunteers (except GMHC administrative volunteers) to attend an ACO.
